I always love the work turned out by the students from France's Gobelins. California Love by the 2008 graduates Lucie Arnissolle, Yann Boyer, Vincent Mahe, Mael Gourmelen and Stephen Vuillemin is as well made as any movie released by their illustrious predecessors. A CG piece, naturally, its making is chronicled in California Love – making of. It seems that the school takes natural artists and equips them with the requisite technical skills. The results are always impressive. Animation is as ever supremely confident, and here the artwork is well crafted with more than a touch of style to the production. I'm not so sure of the subject matter though, it consisting of boy feeding pills to girl who gets super excited and takes the youth on a bumpy ride, dislodging him eventually to land on some other unsuspecting girl who in turn participates in the act of pill popping with similar exhilarating results. If yesterday's movie said something about American society, what does this say about casual sex under California's blue skies. No disputing the excellence of the production however. Again, as I often say, it's worth a click on the image to appreciate the detail and use of colour. A visit to the students' website provides more images and information.
