Yesterday's feature on Javan Ivey's unusual technique is followed up today at the instigation of Javan himself who pointed me towards an animator who has taken his self-styled Stratastencil a stage further in a recent piece announcing the Line-up Announcement Film for Bonnaroo (Bruce Springsteen, Phish, Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, Elvis Costello, David Byrne, Animal Collective ... if you are interested but sadly for UK fans the wrong Manchester.) Elliot Jokelson is the director in question, an animator who was in any case on my list of animators to be posted on. The names come thick and fast in an ever changing procession and also in 3D for which the technique seems admirably suited. I'm not sure if it is all created in the same manner however, there looks to be some CGI in the mix - though given the number of paper consultants involved in the process I'm probably wrong. Originally from Philadelphia, Elliot graduated from Columbia University's Graduate Film Program. His studio, Ghost Robot, is one of the best around and I will feature more work by Elliot and his colleague Tommy Pallotta shortly.
