Brancaleone alle Crociate (Brancaleone at the Crusades) directed in 1971 by Mario Monicelli was distinquished by the work of animators Emanuele Luzzati and Giulio Gianini whose credits set the comic tone for the movie, introduces cast and crew, and entertains the audience along the way. The pair received two Academy Award nominations for their cut-out animation work for La Gazza Ladra (The Thieving Magpie) in 1964 and Pulcinella in 1973. Their work was celebrated last summer at Hiroshima '08 though Emanuele had died the previous year. As may be judged from three random images, he was one of the world's foremost set designers. He will be the subject of a forthcoming post.
