David Forest "Le Cinquième Jour" (2009)

I should not like you to think these reviews are thrown together. Notice the link with flying in Le Cinquième Jour and today’s other movie. David Forest, a graduate from Cégep du Vieux Montréal, uses 2D elements notably in the opening credits, though the predominantly 3D short film serves as a contrast in style with that of Oscar’s piece. It centres on the survival of a pilot whose plane has crashed high up on mountain crag, somewhat improbably towering over the clouds given that it supports a gaunt if undeniable tree. The pilot wrestles control of his parachute in a demonstration of strength against adversity. As with my companion movie, the conclusion is apt though different entirely in tone. David won the university's Best Short Film award for his year. He has a sound grasp of the drama of it all, an eye for the visual potential of parachute against a glorious sky and the technical/artistic skills to single handedly make the movie.
